Gates. improvements are still in progress on our telephone lines, and the Messrs Leavitt are giving us a good service. Mr. C. M. Salmon, of Port Jervis, N. Y. has returned for the winter, and and is as happy as ever at the Piney Woods Inn. Mr. Salmon is always welcome at Southern Pines, and makes us a good citizen six months in the year. On the 14th of Dec. the King's Daughters will have a sale of fancy articles, handkerchiefs etc., at their hall; and will have a supper in the evening. This will be a good chance foryoutobuy your Christmas pres ents. A very pleasant call this morning from Mr. Geo. A. Letford, represent ing H. E. BuckTen & Co., Chicago, Mr. Letford is the most popular trav eling man known to the Free Press, and makes contracts f ir advertising with several thousand newspapers. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs, P. A. Stebbins are pleased to know that they have returned to their pretty home in Southern Pines after an ex tended visit iu the North. Mr. Steb bins informed the Free Press report er that their trip was a very pleasant one. ; over towu-2- t The family of C. A. Ball with other friends coming in two teams from Hardwick, Mass., passed through town Friday on their way to a farm which they are to occupy, a short dis tance to the southward. They drove all the way from Massachusetts, hav ing been several weeks on the road. They had with them a cow and calf which they purchased on the road. Our water works plant has been completed to an extent which allows tapping the main, and quite a party were present about noon at the South ern Pines hotel to witness the first tap which was made by Messrs Thurs ton and Davis for Mr. W. E. Giles for his hotel. The plumbing was done by Mr. F. H. Marcotte who is repre senting that popular firm the South ern Plumbing & Heating Co. Raleigh. Our passenger station is receiving a new ccat of paint on top, and some new wording has been added to each end. Improvements come often on theS. A. L. and the order1 has been given for a new depot and warehouse to be built North of Connecticut avenue, the trol ley line also to be extended some dis tance further ncrth and across sai.l avenue, thus giving the new building a position between the trolley line and the main line of theS. A. L. Rjilwav. Agent Peck informs us that the new building will be used by the trolley line and the public in general so that still further accommodations may be extended the patrons of the greater Seaboard.
